Interns will receive a well-rounded training course on the cultivation, maintenance, and optimization of phytoplankton cultures to support marine life in aquaculture and Aquarium systems. This role will assist in understanding what a crucial part phytoplankton plays for the production of aquatic organisms in the aquatic field. Interns will be responsible for completing a project based on this designation at the aquarium. Learning Outcomes: Interns will learn how to Cultivate and maintain phytoplankton cultures for use in aquaculture and public aquarium systems. Interns will assist in monitoring culture conditions, including light, temperature, nutrients, and aeration, to ensure optimal growth and productivity. Interns will assist in harvesting and distributing phytoplankton to designated tanks and culture systems as needed. Interns will learn how to conduct routine water quality testing and troubleshoot any issues related to phytoplankton culture health. Internship Summary: Climate Solutions Interns are undergraduate students based in NYC who are interested in finding where they fit in the global fight against climate change. Interns will be trained to understand the climate crisis and join the Wildlife Conservation Society in its goal of extending climate education and action into NYC neighborhoods. With resources and guidance from mentors, interns will select a social research question of their choice and use their findings to synthesize a formal plan for how their communities can adapt to a climate-related phenomenon. Interns do not need previous experience with science, but should have an interest and willingness to learn. Internship Description: The Prospect Park Zoo animal internship offers two different areas of focus and learning. Animal Care interns will receive hands-on education and training in animal husbandry. Interns are involved in many aspects of animal care including exhibit and enclosure maintenance, diet preparation, animal observation, animal handling (based on experience) and enrichment. Interns will also complete a project assigned by PPZ Animal Department management or a university assignment approved by PPZ. Project must be accomplished and a PowerPoint presentation given to staff during the term is required to successfully complete the internship. Enrichment Interns will focus on learning how to evaluate animal enrichment and contribute to the zoological community. As part of our team, you will learn basic and applied research related to animal behavior and enrichment in a zoological setting through your involvement in the research, design, and implementation of animal enrichment. Interns will develop their own animal enrichment items with guidance from the Animal Department staff and learn to evaluate animal responses and interactions with those items as their project. Learning Outcomes:(vary slightly depending on focus) You will learn how to effectively interact with zoo visitors and provide educational information about the zoo, its exhibits and the animal collection. Animal Care interns will: Learn how to perform safe, proper and humane care of assigned animals according to established protocols under the direction of the appropriate wild animal keeper and /or the supervisory/curatorial staff. Learn to prepare animal diets according to established protocols. Learn how to perform safe and proper maintenance of assigned animal exhibits, holding facilities and associated service areas according to established protocols. You will cultivate public speaking abilities through public interpretation of Sea Lion Training Demonstrations as needed by the Animal Department. Enrichment interns will Learn how to develop and implement novel enrichment for specific animals under the direction of Animal Department staff. Learn to describe and analyze animal behavior through video-recording, observations Learn data entry, analysis, and database management. Minimum Qualifications: You must be 18 years or older. Current college student Current negative tuberculosis (TB) test at your expense and proof of health insurance. Interest in biology or a related field with an interest in an animal care career. Preference will be given to undergraduate students studying biology, psychology, or related fields who wish to pursue a career in animal care or research. Must be available on weekends and holidays. The position requires interns to be outdoors in all weather conditions. Tasks require manual dexterity and ability to safely use tools (e.g. drill, wire cutters, computer keyboard). Intern daily activities may include: climbing, kneeling, bending, navigating uneven terrain, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds. Ability to represent WCS in a professional manner and to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, and the general public. Internship Summary: The Bronx Zoo’s Ornithology Department is seeking an intern with a desire to learn aviculture and the care of a variety of birds within the zoo’s avian collection. Interns will learn the professional and technical work skills involved in the daily care of animals, mainly birds, but also include mammals, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates. Interns will support the keepers in the Ornithology Department and will learn to conduct a comprehensive range of zoo activities including animal husbandry, learning about diets, nutrition, exhibit repair, assistance with animal transfers and record keeping duties. Interns will report directly to a supervisor or manager but will at times assist Senior Keepers and/or Wild Animal Keepers in an assigned section. By the conclusion of their session, interns will complete a research project or written paper about an aspect of Aviculture that they selected to further explore. While many learning outcomes overlap, there are two different tracks available for the internship: Daily Care and Husbandry- Interns will focus on learning the feeding, behaviors, training, and handling of animals with an emphasis on avian enclosures and the physical husbandry and care in the day to day operations of the ornithology collection. Data Collection & Management- Interns will learn the professional and technical work skills involved in the office management and logging data including behaviors, incubation and natal records, daily reports, information systems including ZIMS as well as internal ID cards. Interns will learn about writing protocols and gathering collection information as well as the importance of logging the information for records as well as preserving zoo history. This position will offer a unique chance to learn and understand the information and technical side of the care and maintenance of the avian collection. Learning Outcomes: You will learn the daily aviculture routine including how to prepare and follow prescribed diets and feeding procedures for the animal collection. You will learn to observe general animal health and behavior, on a daily basis, and report any abnormal circumstances to a supervisor. You will learn to maintain records of health, behavior, enrichment, operant conditioning and visitor engagement issues in avian collection including how to log data including behaviors, incubation and natal records, daily reports, information systems including ZIMS as well as internal ID cards. You will learn how to assist with any behavior modification, training and enrichment care in avian areas. You will learn how to assist any visitor engagement programs that are included in avian areas and interact with the public and Bronx Zoo staff in a professional and courteous manner. You will collaborate with an assigned avian Zoo staff person to identify a potential project to be completed by the end of your internship experience; a portion of your daily experience will be spent on your developed project. -
